The increasing ubiquity of digital technology has resulted in audio and video tape, and the machines they are played on, becoming a regular sight amongst the rubbish of society. This process of technological determinism and general consumerism throws up some fascinating tangents to explore - of special interest is the material found on discarded tape, especially home recordings of all kinds. These are used frequently in Eclectiktronik projects.
Your Magnetic Lifetime illustrates how all stages of our lives - from birth to death - are captured using magnetic recording all of which was later discarded. From the baby's first cries recorded on audio or videotape, childhood holidays and school plays captured on video, educational projects and language learning captured in langauge labs and classroom recorders through to taped business meetings on dictaphones..... Every aspect seems to be there.
Of particular interest in this work is magnetic strips on dozens of discarded everyday items like bus tickets and credit cards. This form of magnetic media is ubiquitous, it is in our wallets and handbags (usually in the form of credit cards and access swipe cards). Magnetic bus/train tickets lie strewn on the streets of any major city. However, few people seem to stop and ask: What are we carrying round with us every day? What does it sound like?
